Well it’s true that AMVs are illegal cuz I know a few ppl, that they got their video down due to copyright violation…

but look at this side of the story , Anime Boston, one of the biggest anime-con , holds Boston AMV contest every year, just search BOSTON AMV on youtube…

so what’s the real deal here?…is making AMVs illegal or not?

example of an AMV (for those who don’t know):

source of Boston Contest:

the main subject here is “Anime Boston (a really famous Anime Convension) Holds AMV contest even if AMVs are illegal…why aren’t the sued or sumthing?

Usualy Amvs aren’t illigal since it’s just parts of the anime like a comercial & can by any means harm the anime or it’s makers or mak them loose money but still there are some amv that got deleted cuz of it’s content mostly cuz the corrupted the anime’s storry or introduce untrue facts to it.
Check out my AMVs & tell me what you think

Anime News Network’s Answerman has addressed this a few times. Here’s what he says in a somewhat recent column when someone asked if AMVs are illegal:

“Anime music videos break all kinds of copyright and intellectual property laws; they’re not only infringing on the anime, they’re also using someone else’s music without permission.

That said, with few exceptions, most bands don’t seem to notice or care about AMVs, and the Japanese don’t seem to care much either, so generally they’re left alone. Sometimes they get caught up in the random fansub sweeps YouTube does every now and then, but that’s about it. No, they’re not legal, but nobody seems to care about them.”

So, while they aren’t exactly legal, they’re not hurting anybody and even most of the creators of the anime/music used in them don’t seem to be bothered by them. But if you want to get technical, then yes, they are illegal.

Yes because the charaters shown in the AMV are a property of the maker of that Anime.
We are not supposed to upload them on any website.

As an IP Development professional I can tell you that they are most defiantly illegal, its just that in the same sense as the Homemade Heroes trend of a few years back, until individuals begin to make a profit or gain a significant amount of attention from the public over properties which they didn’t legally obtain the right to distribute - most copyright holders don’t really care. But as always be careful. As for Anime Boston, they have protected themselves, believe me. They some form of agreement to hosts the contest, but they don’t distribute nor create the content submitted.

    Peace,

And I do enjoy watching those Anime Music Vids, but I would never make one, just in case.
